The Winners of A DAY AT THE BEACH

The top four pieces from our August 2017 Design Challenge
A Day at the Beach

For our August Design Challenge, we asked our readers to kick off their sandals and make something summery.  Are you inspired by being near the water? Love natural materials like beach glass, shells or bits of driftwood? Inspired by mermaid motifs or creatures from the ocean deep? Whether you paddle fresh water or breathe ocean air, climb the dunes or doze in the late afternoon sun, you're going to love the top vote getters in A DAY AT THE BEACH.

The winner of our Reader's Choice Award, voted on by Facet readers, is Dianna Mooses of Lehigh Acres, Florida! Her stunning piece, OCEAN WAVES, features shells encased in resin, and then wire-wrapped in Sterling silver wire.

Learn more about Dianna and her wirework on the Facebook page for her business, Dianna Von Biehl Jewelry.

This next piece, STORM TOSSED BRACELET, is made from metal clay. The "wave" bands were done in PMC3, and then they were connected with Argentium Sterling silver rings. A sterling silver box clasp set with a vintage Swarovski crystal completes the piece.

It was created by Bridgette L. Rallo of Norfolk, CT, who can also be found on Facebook. She does lovely work with metal clay, but also is quite accomplished at chain mail. Be sure to take a look at her pendants!

This stunning piece of bead embroidery comes to us all the way from Blackhead, Australia! Rosemary Holland created her TURTLE SEA COLLAR from cabochons, seed beads, stone chips, and the focal piece, a green patina turtle.

Her website shows off her amazing bezels and embroidery, we can't wait to learn more about her technique!

Using a shell from Myrtle Beach and sea-inspired colors, this kumihimo necklace was created by Chris Lewis-King of Binghamton, NY.

Called MYRTLE BEACH MEMORIES, it obviously invokes wonderful memories from what must have been a dream of a vacation.

Congratulations to all our winners! We were thrilled to have more than 100 entries to the August Design Challenge. So much beautiful work from so many talented jewelry makers! Thanks to all of our participants, and everyone who voted for their favorite.

Want to get in on the fun? The September Challenge is underway and you still have plenty of time to submit your entry. The theme is HARVEST MOON.

Summer ends and we bring in the harvest. Fruits, berries, and sunflowers fill our tables. What can you make during September to celebrate the autumn? Explore the colors of fall in your jewelry making: eggplant and beet, caramel and pumpkin, green apple and amber grain. Browse the farmer’s market for inspiration, or take advantage of the golden autumn sunlight (or the uncommonly bright moonlight) for a walk through the woods or the empty fields.

will run from September 6-27, 2017. And be sure to help us pick the next READER'S CHOICE AWARD; voting is now open!
